One of the favorite things I have heard from a patient is: you’re a doctor, you don’t have to worry about blood pressure. Implying, of course, that doctor’s don’t struggle with their health.
I most certainly do struggle with fitness and health, like many other Americans with sedentary jobs and a proclivity to eat treats. One of my goals is to make sure that I get my 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise (or 75 minutes of high intensity exercise, which probably won’t happen). I will see for how long I am willing to document my progress Saturday to Friday.
This week involved a lot of driving, and coming back to a full week of work. And holiday stuff.
- Saturday: Walked before getting in the car for a long ride home. I aimed for a path through trees (see above) and really enjoyed getting away from the road and cars for a few minutes. Walked 50 minutes.
- Sunday: We had to break up the drive into two parts because of weather. After many hours driving, we both needed to stretch our legs. Walked 40 minutes around the neighborhood.
- Monday: A poor night’s sleep led to a total lack of desire to exercise, despite having the time. I eventually convinced myself to do yoga for a few minutes (16 of them). It seemed like a long time since I last practiced, and I see it was actually 3 weeks. No wonder my muscles feel sad.
- Tuesday: Ostensibly a full day of clinic (several no-shows and cancellations). I got paper work done, but couldn’t leave early. My Fitbit says I walked 9 minutes (back and forth to the coffee stand).
- Wednesday: Light day and walked part-way home. 17 minutes of walking.
- Thursday: I thought about doing some yoga, or walking, and did neither. Clinic was very aggravating, and I just couldn’t do it. Zero minutes exercising.
- Friday: I walked a bit at work, and also partway home. 28 minutes walking.
Total: 144 minutes walking and 16 minutes doing yoga. I guess this is a win as far as getting in 150 minutes, but looking at my poor attitude on Thursday, I don’t feel quit as victorious as I wish.
