I have been keeping track of my exercise every Friday for over a year, and plan to continue doing so.
During this pandemic, though, things change so rapidly, I want to acknowledge some of the ways we are coping with it. I am keeping track of some of my “firsts” as I deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Friday Firsts
This week had a number of firsts:
- Made a home made mask from a handkerchief and two hair ties for walking outside. See this link for instructions.
- Took my outdoor walk wearing said mask, at my husband’s request. I definitely felt odd and conspicuous. Also, my glasses fogged up; this is not nearly as good as a surgical mask.
- Enjoyed a “virtual tea” with girl friends on Google Hangouts. I also got a lecture from my tech friend about security issues with Zoom.
- This was the first time (ever) I had to celebrate the holidays on my own. I almost always go home to my parents. When I couldn’t manage that, I wrangled an invitation to someone else’s house.
Fitness Log
As a reminder, my goal is to make sure that I at least 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise. I am working towards incorporating strength training into my week, with a goal of 60 minutes.
How did I do?
- Saturday: Took a short walk in the afternoon, for 24 minutes. I was tired, also wearing a mask did not make the walk easier.
- Sunday: Went for a longer walk after tea. It started to drizzle, but I kept going. 39 minutes.
- Monday: Went into the office today, but took a walk after I came home. I took the same route as yesterday, but apparently walked it in only 34 minutes. I used my surgical mask (issued at work for the day), and it was much easier to breathe on the steep hills, which may have helped.
- Tuesday: Worked from home all day, then joined a Zoom yoga class, 80 minutes.
- Wednesday: I had a little too much time at home today. Took a walk for 36 minutes, which wasn’t quite long enough to cool me down. The day ended on a good note.
- Thursday: Slept in today (it was supposed to be a day off). I kept meaning to go out for a walk, but by the time I was ready the weather had turned. No exercise today.
- Friday: Took an afternoon walk. It was good to get out of the house after about 48 hours indoors. I forgot my mask, but saw more people wearing them today than last week. 30 minutes walking.
Total: 163 minutes walking and 80 minutes yoga, which I will count as weight training. Not bad, I met my goal this week, but I am hoping to feel up to some longer walks for next week. And possibly figure out some additional weight training, so that I can do it twice a week (though my yoga is certainly meeting my goal of 60 minutes weekly).
