Fitness Log #295, Friday Firsts, Fabulousness, And Monthly Goals

I have been keeping track of my exercise every Friday for 5 years, and plan to continue doing so.

Since the pandemic started, I have been keeping track of “firsts,” and more lately, I have been trying to note good things (“fabulousness”). It’s a good way to pay attention and not let life slide by.

Friday Firsts

This week’s firsts:

  1. Mr. PiN and I talked about his work (more than 1 person can do right now), and which chores we can outsource to free up time for him.

Fabulousness

Mr. PiN and I dressed up (for us) and went out to one of the places we went with his sister. It wasn’t quite as good the second time, but it was still fun to go.

Masked and veiled Venetians from the 1700s get into a gondola, with many people looking on.
Our dinner date wasn’t nearly so fancy.

Later in the week, I took a morning off, and we went to an exhibit at our local art museum. The exhibit was nice. I also ran into one of my old attendings (later a practice partner for years), who asked if I was also retired.

Fitness Log

The goal is to get 150 minutes of moderate exercise, of which (ideally) 60 minutes should build strength (yoga counts); if I am working in the hospital, my goal is just 90 minutes, which is a more realistic stretch during those busy days.

How did I do?

  • Saturday:  I took an early morning walk, before the temperature was too much for me (darned heat wave) My usual 20-minute walk was a good deal longer, as my short-cut to return home is being repaved. I walked 28 sweaty minutes instead.
  • Sunday:  The heat wave is supposed to break at any time, but I elected to stay indoors all day (and did not feel motivated to exercise).
  • Monday: A walk outdoors now that the temperature dropped to the more normal summer range, 40 minutes. And, after some delays, I had an early workout with my trainer, 30 minutes.
  • Tuesday: A walk in the neighborhood, 33 minutes.
  • Wednesday: A tennis lesson, 60 minutes. I played horribly, but I was moving.
  • Thursday: Today was a day to see the museum. No exercise after work.
  • Friday: A long day today, and I didn’t feel great after clinic; no exercise.

Total:101 minutes of walking, 30 minutes of strength training, and 60 minutes of tennis, for a total of 191 minutes. I met my goal!

CME: 3 on Monday, 3 on Tuesday videos, 3 on Wednesday–my eyeballs were ready to fall out by the end, but I finished all my required CME and can now register for my subspecialty boards.

Monthly Round Up

  • Exercise goals (150 minutes per week mostly; but only 90 minutes when working on the hospital wards): I met my goal 3 of the past 4 weeks. If it hadn’t been for the heat wave, and having to rest for longer periods during my (outdoors) tennis lesson, I would have managed this all 4 weeks. I am pretty happy with my progress here.
  • Foot exercises (2 to 3 times a week): Totally forgotten.
  • Clutter goals: Ahead of my sister-in-law’s visit, I cleared out 2 grocery bags of magazines and journals, and cleared off about 1/3 of the items from my desk (the one where the piano will eventually go).
  • Local Adventures. Visited 3 new restaurants, and visited the museum this week. Mr. PiN also took me to a neighborhood I had never visited, to look at a house for sale (he is thinking about buying a rental). The trip was interesting, but research unearthed a bunch of issues with the house we don’t want to manage.
  • CME. Goal of 8 to 12 lecture videos: 17 videos this month, finally hitting my required target.
  • Social activity (1.5 in-person activity per month). The party with Mr. PiN’s pickleball friends, and visiting with Mr. PiN’s sister.

Overall, I seem to be doing pretty well except for the foot exercises. My foot tells me I should actually do them. Maybe for next month…

I hope you have had a good week as well. Feel free to share any fabulous news of your own.
