One of the favorite things I have heard from a patient is: you’re a doctor, you don’t have to worry about blood pressure. Implying, of course, that doctor’s don’t struggle with their health.
I most certainly do struggle with fitness and health, like many other Americans with sedentary jobs and a proclivity to eat treats. One of my goals is to make sure that I get my 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise (or 75 minutes of high intensity exercise, which probably won’t happen). I will see for how long I am willing to document my progress Saturday to Friday.
This week I was still working in the hospital, but getting ready for/recovering from the holidays.
- Saturday: The hospital was quiet, and I was able to leave early. However, I felt pretty awful: no walking home, and once I was home, I was all about the Advil and sitting in my comfy chair. It took me several hours to do about 45 minutes of computer work from home. No exercise today.
- Sunday: The hospital was quiet again, and this time I did walk home: 51 minutes walked. I was tired out, and didn’t do much else the rest of the day.
- Monday: Walked part-way home, 27 minutes. I enjoyed the quiet of Christmas Eve, such a contrast to the usual hustle and bustle.
- Tuesday: Worked at the hospital providing holiday coverage. My Fitbit registered 17 active minutes (I was going back and forth a lot). I went for a proper walk after work, a lovely 51 minute walk enjoying the neighborhood.
- Wednesday: Work got very busy after Christmas. No exercise time for me.
- Thursday: My husband had an appointment, so he dropped me off near work. I was able to walk for 15 minutes getting into work. After that, it was a full day that ended quite late.
- Friday: I’m off and away today. I may get some exercise in, but won’t be able to blog about it until this post is due.
Total: 144 minutes walking with purpose, but 161 minutes walking per my Fitbit. Walking on Friday TBD. No yoga. I think I’m calling this week a win–a squeaker of a victory, but nonetheless a victory.
