One of the favorite things I have heard from a patient is: you’re a doctor, you don’t have to worry about blood pressure. Implying, of course, that doctor’s don’t struggle with their health.
I most certainly do struggle with fitness and health, like many other Americans with sedentary jobs and a proclivity to eat treats. One of my goals is to make sure that I get my 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise (or 75 minutes of high intensity exercise, which probably won’t happen). I was doing well enough that I added a second goal of 60 minutes of strength training a week; I totally backslid after a tough two weeks (bad weather, draining rotation in the hospital).
- Saturday: Ran around like a nut, getting the house ready for an overnight guest. Who I then picked up, and showed around town. I did manage to get 32 minutes of walking in as I played hostess.
- Sunday: A little more tour-guiding, though mostly from the car. Rested for the remainder of the day. Zero time exercising.
- Monday: Walked part way home from work. 24 minutes walking.
- Tuesday: Forced myself to bring out the weights again. 18 minutes.
- Wednesday: A light day with some personal appointments. Somehow, exercise kept getting pushed later and later, until it didn’t happen.
- Thursday: Work ran late, I came home at my former usual hour. 🙁 Somehow my Fitbit registered 7 minutes while I was pacing in clinic.
- Friday: Work ran late, even later than yesterday. Traffic was terrible, I got home super-late. No formal exercise, but having to go hither and yon at work registered 22 minutes on the Fitbit.
Total: 85 minutes walking, and 18 minutes of strength training, for a total of 103 minutes of exercise overall. Overall, I feel I have been making negative progress. The weather is supposed to improve next week, I’m going to try to get out more.
