One of the favorite things I have heard from a patient is: you’re a doctor, you don’t have to worry about blood pressure. Implying, of course, that doctor’s don’t struggle with their health.
I most certainly do struggle with fitness and health, like many other Americans with sedentary jobs and a proclivity to eat treats. One of my goals is to make sure that I get my 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise (or 75 minutes of high intensity exercise, which probably won’t happen). I was doing well enough that I added a second goal of 60 minutes of strength training a week; I’m still working my way up to that part of the goal.
This was a very long week at work, I didn’t have enough time to get through all my required paperwork, let alone carve out time for exercise.
- Saturday: At work for a long day. No exercise.
- Sunday: Went for a walk to clear my head after work. 34 minutes.
- Monday: My Fitbit says I walked 10 minutes, I think it was for coffee.
- Tuesday: I don’t remember doing any real exercise, but my Fitbit recorded 7 minutes of walking.
- Wednesday: Car troubles meant I walked into work. It was a nice walk, except for feeling like I was running late. 50 minutes walking.
- Thursday: A tremendously long day. No exercise.
- Friday: An even longer day. No exercise.
Total: 101 minutes walking, more than I had thought, and zero minutes of strength training, for a total of 101 minutes of exercise overall.
This week working in the hospital was very, very long. As far as getting my exercise in, this was a failure. As far as patient care, I think I did better. I am looking forward to getting more exercise next week.
