Fitness Log #139 And Friday Firsts

I have been keeping track of my exercise every Friday for over 2 years, and plan to continue doing so.

I started the Friday Firsts sections as a way of keeping track of some of my “firsts” as I dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic. Things seem to be settling down, but I will keep it for now–more as a way to be aware and thankful of what is happening in my life.

Friday Firsts

This week’s firsts:

  1. This was the first week that I totally missed my internet tea with my friends. Usually I can catch a few minutes even if I am on-call, but I had to attend a work thing in the middle of Sunday afternoon (boo!).
  2. I actually found myself watching sports on a weekday morning (a non-clinic day, I promise). I don’t know what’s gotten into me, but I really enjoyed watching the French Open live.
  3. For the first time, someone in my Buy Nothing group asked for something I had been planning to offer (but never got around to). I had such satisfaction offloading my bulky gift!
My hip–not nearly as muscled as Hercules’– had me at arrow point this week.

Fitness Log

As a reminder, my current goal is to make sure that I get 210 minutes a week of moderate exercise, of which 60 minutes should build strength (yoga counts); if I am working in the hospital, my goal is just 90 minutes, which is a more realistic stretch during those busy days.

However, last week I did something very bad to my leg and hip, and was too uncomfortable to exercise much.

How did I do this week?

  • Saturday:  My hip is still sore. I tried stretching it and had cramping for about a quarter hour. I decided against exercise and decided to just work on all my left over notes from last week, which is a good excuse to lie on the sofa. No exercise today.
  • Sunday:  I had to go to a work thing, that was more than enough exercise for the day.
  • Monday: I am really starting to get better, though I am clearly not well. I was texting with my trainer, she thinks we should put off a session until next week (I am pretty fine with that).
  • Tuesday: A few minutes (like 2) after I stepped out the door for an after-work walk, it started pouring; I went home. My hip and leg still aren’t great, so no yoga for me today.
  • Wednesday: I finally made it out for a walk after work. I didn’t go far, but I was excited not to feel too bad. 20 minutes.
  • Thursday: A long day of work and no exercise.
  • Friday: I took my shorter walk after work. I am finally feeling better, and even entertained taking a longer walk, but I decided to be conservative. My hip isn’t all better, and I have no desire to make it angry again. It took me 22 minutes to do that walk.

Total: 42 minutes walking, after several days of recovery from an injury. I didn’t make my usual goal at all, but was just glad to be able to get back to movement without too much pain. I think I will have to be careful next week too, though I am hoping to be able to manage a little time on the tennis courts. We will see.
