I usually read a lot of personal finance blogs every day. Even though many of my favorite bloggers seem to be slowing down, I enjoyed a number of great posts in September. Here are some of my favorites.
As the seasons turn, and Fall approaches, my mind does turn to decluttering. (Probably due to the realization that I will be spending more time indoors, so I’d like it not to be too messy.)
Over at No Sidebar, I read a lovely piece about allowing items to leave your life (or house): The Trees Are About To Show Us How Lovely It Is To Let Things Go.
Another piece on letting things go that I will find useful this fall as I clear out unused items: 4 Reasons to Declutter Your Home That You May Not Have Considered, from Jennifer at Simply+Fiercely. I especially liked section 3, about how the cluttered item makes you feel:
- An unused serving platter shouts, “Are you ever going to host that dinner party you bought me for?”
- An unopened package of yarn whispers, “Why am I not a sweater yet?”
- A cocktail dress with the tags still attached calls to you, “You’re so boring; you should get out more!”
I’d now totally be willing to get rid of those loud mouths, when you point out what they are saying.
On to a totally different collection of posts, this time dealing with some of the tougher aspects of life. Death and disability are not the most fun things to think about, but I found these posts so touching and inspiring, I wanted to share them with you. Pull your Kleenex box close and read on.
The Darwinian Doctor writes a heartfelt memorial about his older sister in Escaping the Shadow of Suicide: A Journey from Heartbreak to Freedom.
In Promises Kept (at Humble Dollar), Ken Cutler remembers the lessons learned looking after uncles who were unable to live independently. There are a lot of personal finance tips in the piece, but, more importantly, a lot of good people.
Over at Boomer Eco Crusader, Michelle pulled up this article on Terry Fox on a Throwback Thursday post. I don’t remember hearing about him, I’m not sure if it’s because he didn’t get much press down south in the USA, or just because of my youth at the time (I wasn’t paying that much attention to the news in 1981). Whatever the reason, I was glad to learn about Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope in 2023.
In another abrupt change of subject, some bloggers are traveling.
After months of a little extra work, post-retirement, Frogdancer Jones (of Burning Desire for FIRE) has gone to London. She is blogging daily, and I thought I would feature her first day write up as a gateway to her travels. I am exhausted just reading about her first day–though maybe jetlag from Australia is different? However, I love her travel posts–so educational, and funny, and a welcome break from my mundane life right now.
Mel at BrokeGirlRich is studying in London, but taking advantage of her location to travel with friends. She went to Switzerland and posted some lovely pictures as she goes through her August Accountability post.
Travel during grad school is not an emergency, but Nature has provided plenty of true emergencies this summer to worry about. Blue Lobster reminds us that Your Emergency Is On Its Way–Prepare Now! I am a big fan of the emergency fund, so she is preaching to the choir in my house.
Do you have any favorite posts for the month?
Thank you so much for featuring my post. Terry Fox’s story is such an inspiration, even all these years later. A true hero!
Absolutely inspiring. I was so happy to share your post about his story.
