I have been keeping track of my exercise every Friday for 6 years, and plan to continue doing so.
Since the pandemic started, I have been keeping track of “firsts,” and more lately, I have been trying to note good things (“fabulousness”). It’s a good way to pay attention and not let life slide by.
This week had some fabulousness, and some definitely-not-fabulous firsts.
Fabulousness
My mother and I had a lovely time together for the weekend. She took me to a play (it was a relatively new one, I enjoyed it), and then shopping at a fancy outlet mall. I picked up a few things I had thinking about for a while–the discounts were very nice.
I also was able to gift several books, which had been sitting on my “give away” pile for a year, to a couple who had asked for these titles on their wedding registry. If they don’t want them used, well–they are getting a very nice check as well.
Friday Firsts
My best friend, who went to the ER last week, died suddenly in the hospital.
I have had friends and classmates die before, usually of young person issues (car accidents). She was the first friend I’ve had to die of chronic disease. The whole thing stinks, but knowing that I may have to deal with this more over time (hopefully not for another 25+ years) stinks more.
Fitness Log
The goal is to get 150 minutes of moderate exercise, of which (ideally) 60 minutes should build strength (yoga counts); if I am working in the hospital, my goal is just 90 minutes, which is a more realistic stretch during those busy days.
How did I do?
- Saturday: Visiting mom and throwing toys for the cat. No real exercise.
- Sunday: Same as Sunday.
- Monday: It was an airport day, and then I hung around the house feeling tired.
- Tuesday: Bad weather and then bad news meant I didn’t get much exercise today either.
- Wednesday: I did attend my tennis lesson, and played poorly, but for an hour.
- Thursday: The weather was bad and I was exhausted at work. No exercise for me.
- Friday: Again, work was exhausting (or maybe I was just worn out). I finished seeing patients and pretty much collapsed on the sofa without exercise.
Total: No counted minutes of walking, though I likely got some going through airports, and 60 minutes of tennis.

Happy July 4, if you celebrate. I hope your week has been better than mine.

I am so sorry to hear about your friend. Hugs to you.
Thank you, Michelle. These posts are a little time-delayed, so it’s been a few weeks since the event, but I am still shocked and sad that this happened.
