In The Shadow Of The Big C

The SARS2-CoV pandemic shut down a good portion of our lives this spring, and changed the rest. We were asked (or ordered) to stay at home. We were advised (or ordered) to wear masks when going out. No shopping, no shows, no parties, no travel.

For the most part, this didn’t bother me much. I was pretty upset to cancel a trip in March, but I eventually got over it. I went to work, Mr. PiN made sure there was food on the table; we watched movies and discovered Amazon Prime Video.

However, our household was affected in a very serious way by the shut down.

About 4 days before our area halted non-emergency medical services, Mr. PiN had a scan that found an incidentaloma. Because of the pandemic, we had to wait nearly 3 months to continue the work up. I had a lot of heartburn worrying about what he had, and how dangerous this delay was. Once the work up started, though, things moved super fast. He had surgery last week, and is already starting to recover.

One of the few benefits of having to wait is the relaxed visitation rules. When I was working in the hospital in April, patients weren’t allowed visitors, because of concerns over coronavirus. It turns out that we aren’t currently a raging hotspot, hospital patients are allowed one visitor, and I can sit with Mr. PiN as he recovers from his procedures. I have a feeling this might not continue to be the case later this year, so I am pretty happy about the timing.

In some ways it has been quite relaxing to go in, and just spend time with him. He is a pretty easy patient, and naps a lot. It is still tiring to sit in a hospital room most of the day (sometimes I escape to my office for a little bit), and I can’t wait for him to be well enough to return home.

I will feel even better once the final pathology is in. The surgeon doesn’t think we need to worry about malignancy, but, of course, we all want final confirmation from the pathologist. If everything is fine, I may post some thoughts about being a support person in the same building when I see patients. If not, I may go offline for a while. It all depends on hearing good news.

Hopefully tomorrow.

  1. Wow that certainly added a twist with the pandemic. Hopefully path comes back negative.

I too had to cancel a spring break trip to Cancun with my daughter. Both of us were highly disappointed but got over it we well.

    1. We are still waiting on the path, but got some other good news: he came home today! Though we are disappointed about all the trips we had to postpone, we will be happy if everything turns out well. (And I suspect the medical costs will be about the same as those trips, so maybe it’s just as well we couldn’t travel…)

      1. The path turned out OK. Hooray!

However, I am having some problems with the web host, and so no posting this week until that is resolved.
