Fitness Log #173 And Friday Firsts

I have been keeping track of my exercise every Friday for over 3 years, and plan to continue doing so.

I started the Friday Firsts sections as a way of keeping track of some of my “firsts” as I dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic. Things seem to be settling down, but I will keep it for now–more as a way to be aware and thankful of what is happening in my life.

Friday Firsts

This week’s firsts:

  1. Went to south Florida in a cold snap. I was happy to wear my winter pyjamas, and was wishing for my cozy comforter.
  2. Watched the last half-hour of the Australian Open (men’s single) match via the Internet. That was amazing!
  3. I was looking for the local sweets that I usually bring back to the office when I am away. I couldn’t find them in the local grocery store or the nearby drugstore. I guess tourism is down in the area.

Fitness Log

For the first few months of 2022, the goal is to do my PT exercises 3 times a week, and get 150 minutes of moderate exercise, of which (ideally) 60 minutes should build strength (yoga counts); if I am working in the hospital, my goal is just 90 minutes, which is a more realistic stretch during those busy days.

How did I do?

Sandy path to the beach with some scrubby grass to each side
Passed daily on our walks.
  • Saturday:  We are on vacation. We walked to our usual spot near sunset, in some cold weather and wind. Stopped for dinner outside. 60 minutes total walking.
  • Sunday:  Again took our usual walk, this time with the sun shining. This was much more pleasant. We even walked a bit longer to visit the weekly farmer’s market. I will still call this 60 minutes of walking.
  • Monday: I was stiff last night, and was more stiff this morning. I did my PT before our long walk and felt better, leading me to wonder, again, why I resist doing my exercises. Anyway, Mr. PiN and I took our usual 60 minute walk (with a pleasant stop on a public square for a bit).
  • Tuesday: After delaying most of the day, we took our walk in the late afternoon, stopping to pick up groceries on the way home. 60 minutes.
  • Wednesday: Finally did our walk in the morning, I always feel better having exercised early. Later in the afternoon, the tide was low and I found myself drawn to walk in the same direction; I walked to our usual destination, only on the beach. I don’t really know how long I took, given that I stopped to watch someone parasailing, a beach-side wedding, and generally enjoyed looking at the waves. I will say 2 hours (120 minutes) to do my walk twice.
  • Thursday: The plan was to walk again in the morning, and maybe eat breakfast out. In actuality, we were both tired, and my legs, at least, were sore. PT in the morning, walk in the mid-afternoon.
  • Friday: Today, we did our walk in the morning, which made for a happier day. PT in the afternoon.

Total: 480 minutes walking, no of tennis (though we brought gear, just in case), and 3 PT sessions, for a total of 492 minutes and some stiff hips. Clearly, I am willing to get some exercise when I have time, and pretty scenery. Also clearly, I should probably work up to my exercise, instead of going from zero to 60 (literally). Next week is back to work, I won’t need to worry about overdoing it; but I would like to hit my target.
