A Day Of Firsts

Today was a day of several firsts. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, everything is changing, quickly.

It started early, with my first group meeting by computer. It was very strange to know the other people in the meeting were in their offices just down the hall; instead of all sitting together in a room, we were sitting at our desks talking to each other by phone.

Actually, I started the day with another first: my first day going out without my wedding ring since I got married. I want to make sure I am not missing anything with my hand hygiene. Still, that ring has been on my finger for years. I felt a little naked going to work without it.

After the meeting, at which we agreed scrubs would be okay to wear to the office, I pulled out an old pair from residency from the bottom drawer of my desk. Today was the first day I’ve worn scrubs to work in over 15 years. The nurses gave the thumbs up, but they don’t feel natural anymore.

This afternoon I saw my first patient for a telemedicine visit. It was nice not to feel anxious about catching or spreading germs, and to let them avoid making the drive to the hospital. I expect I will be doing a lot more in the coming weeks. It was a bit different than seeing someone in the office. I can see I will have to clear the papers off my desk more thoroughly.

I suppose none of these changes were terrible, but I can’t say I like having to make them. I wonder if I will look back in a year at this post, and what I will think about these changes when I do.

Are you dealing with lots of changes as well? Hang in there, and take care of yourself!
