Fitness Log #74

Just because I am a doctor, and encourage patients every day to exercise, doesn’t mean that I don’t have my own issues with getting sufficient exercise. Long hours, tiring days, family obligations, illness: they are all stumbling blocks, no matter what your occupation.

I have been recording my exercise weekly, mostly to keep myself accountable for reaching my goal (sometimes this works, sometimes I miss). If anyone reads this, I hope they will take this as encouragement to keep going, acknowledgement that it isn’t always easy.

As a reminder, my goal is to make sure that I get my 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise (or 75 minutes of high intensity exercise, which probably won’t happen).

I have been trying to incorporate strength training, with many set backs. At the start of 2020, I started working (again) with a trainer, which has so far been quite successful at getting me to the gym. My ultimate goal is to spend 60 minutes a week on this, though starting at 30 minutes a week is perfectly fine.

I was supposed to be in Las Vegas. I wonder if I would have seen these men there?
  • Saturday:  Walked to the library and back, 54 minutes.
  • Sunday:  Went to yoga class, 80 minutes of torture healthy weight training exercise. Afterwards, I met a friend at her house, and we walked to and from a local museum to see the new exhibit. 61 minutes of walking.
  • Monday:  Today was a total grumpathon, what with setting the clocks forward and not getting enough sleep, needy patients, and having to decide not to attend a meeting I was looking forward to. Luckily, I was able to walk part-way home, and I felt much better. 26 minutes of walking and mood improvement.
  • Tuesday:  Walked part-way home from work. For some reason, my Fitbit did not register all my efforts (I stopped to run errands on the way). 18 minutes of walking.
  • Wednesday: My first day of vacation. I ran some errands before working out with my trainer, and then walked home. 32 minutes of walking. And only 25 minutes of weight training because I was late getting to the gym (my bad!).
  • Thursday: Plans for the day changed, then I ended up walking to the post office to mail tax papers. 59 minutes.
  • Friday: I was not dressed for the weather and bailed on exercise. I figured I had already exercised plenty this week (the downside of setting a fitness goal).

Total: 250 minutes walking and 105 minutes weight training. I think I did an awesome job this week!
