Fitness Log #161 And Friday Firsts

I have been keeping track of my exercise every Friday for over 3 years, and plan to continue doing so.

I started the Friday Firsts sections as a way of keeping track of some of my “firsts” as I dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic. Things seem to be settling down, but I will keep it for now–more as a way to be aware and thankful of what is happening in my life.

Friday Firsts

This week’s firsts:

  1. We stayed overnight in a hotel with motion sensor activated floor lights. That is to say, if someone got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, and light attached to the bed frame turned on to light the way. It seems like a great safety innovation, but I think it also really interfered with falling back asleep. (Of course, knowing we had to get up early to catch a flight might have had something to do with that….)
  2. For the first time, I started thinking seriously about owning a second home.
Shore at low tide with 2 boats on the beach.
I saw the ocean (not this one, though) every day that I was on vacation. A great inducement to take my walk.

Fitness Log

As a reminder, my current goal is to make sure that I get 210 minutes a week of moderate exercise, of which 60 minutes should build strength (yoga counts); if I am working in the hospital, my goal is just 90 minutes, which is a more realistic stretch during those busy days.

How did I do?

  • Saturday:  We enjoyed a late afternoon walk on the beach towards our usual destination and then walked back on the sidewalk. 70 minutes.
  • Sunday:  We did our usual morning walk, but it was cool in the shade of the tall buildings. We walked home back by the beach–the tide was high, and it was tough going. 72 minutes round trip.
  • Monday: I’ve stopped timing my walks, since we keep stopping for various reasons. For 3 days in a row, the one-way trip (on the sidewalk; by sand is much slower) from our apartment to our favorite destination has taken 28 minutes. Today we walked back and forth, with a long, pleasant, untimed session of sitting in comfortable public chairs and people-watching. 56 minutes.
  • Tuesday: Another day, another walk on the same route (I am treating as my job, or my “one thing” I get done on vacation). 56 minutes.
  • Wednesday: One last walk before leaving, 56 minutes.
  • Thursday: Visiting my parents, I did not get out for a walk.
  • Friday: Walked home after being dropped off to run errands, 27 minutes.

Total: 337 minutes walking, no other exercise–the walking felt like enough (maybe more than enough). I am happy with my efforts this week.
