Fitness log #3

One of the favorite things I have heard from a patient is: you’re a doctor, you don’t have to worry about blood pressure. Implying, of course, that doctor’s don’t struggle with their health.

I most certainly do struggle with fitness and health, like many other Americans with sedentary jobs and a proclivity to eat treats. One of my goals is to make sure that I get my 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise (or 75 minutes of high intensity exercise, which probably won’t happen). I will see for how long I am willing to document my progress Saturday to Friday.

This week was a slam dunk, as I was on vacation abroad in Greece.  My husband and I always walk a ton on vacation: seeing sights, getting lost, strolling, getting lost, etc.  Too, I’m always surprised at how much mileage my Fitbit measures just in the airport.

  • Saturday: Off to the airport.  We had long layover in Philadelphia, and went into the city. Walked 47 minutes.
  • Sunday: Our overseas flight was canceled, and we were rebooked through 3 airports.  Making connections involved a good deal of walking.  Walked 32 minutes.
  • Monday: Did some sightseeing and walking through the old city area in our first island stop.  I suspect my Fitbit was having problems with the time change, as it only counted 30 minutes of walking this day.
  • Tuesday: Walked along a harbor wall in one city, bused to another city on the island, where we walked along another harbor several times, as we missed the turn off for our hotel, then went out for dinner and an evening stroll.  Walked 224 minutes.
  • Wednesday: Explored the city.  Walked 163 minutes.
  • Thursday: An airport day as we returned to Athens, mostly walked from the train station to the hotel.  Actually, I got sick that afternoon, so there was little exercise at all.  Walking: 28 minutes.
  • Friday: A very busy sightseeing day.  Walked up to the Acropolis, couldn’t stand the long line for tickets, and went down the hill.  We got totally lost, but every time we turned the corner, there was another archeological site to explore.  By the end of the day, we walked 224 minutes.

Total: 748 minutes walking.  A total win on the exercise front.  The vacation was great too!
