Fitness Log #143 And Friday Firsts

I have been keeping track of my exercise every Friday for over 2 years, and plan to continue doing so.

I started the Friday Firsts sections as a way of keeping track of some of my “firsts” as I dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic. Things seem to be settling down, but I will keep it for now–more as a way to be aware and thankful of what is happening in my life.

Friday Firsts

This week’s firsts:

  1. For the first time, I spent time on my vacation looking for a tennis court to play on. It was a fun way to explore a few towns as Google maps failed us.
  2. We traveled a different route from my parents’ home to our own, and saw new sights. We also got lost in the dark (darn you, internet maps!).
  3. Returning to work in the middle of the week meant that I only worked 2 days in clinic before the weekend (not counting the computer work done the day before, to catch up). I think this is a more pleasant way to return from a vacation.
  4. I finally looked up how to cite art work properly.
I couldn’t leave Maine and Winslow Homer behind just yet. Homer, Winslow. Maine Coast. 1896. The Metropolitan Museum of Art. NY, NY. www.metmuseum.org.

Fitness Log

As a reminder, my current goal is to make sure that I get 210 minutes a week of moderate exercise, of which 60 minutes should build strength (yoga counts); if I am working in the hospital, my goal is just 90 minutes, which is a more realistic stretch during those busy days.

How did I do?

  • Saturday:  Left Portland on a leisurely trip back to my parents’ house. We found a public tennis court and practiced together for some time (I’m not sure how long), before hitting the road again.
  • Sunday:  Came back to the family home, where my brother was visiting with his 3 young children. We took them to the park to burn off energy, and spent hours running, throwing tennis balls to hit, collecting tennis balls, pushing kids on swings, etc.
  • Monday: Visiting with family in the morning, started on our way home in the late afternoon. No real travel, unless you count running after several small children.
  • Tuesday: Travel day, followed by unpacking and other such activities. No real exercise.
  • Wednesday: Last day of vacation, sort of. Bad weather, and I logged in for over 3 hours to clear some of the messages and other work before I “really” return to work tomorrow. No exercise.
  • Thursday: Back to work, with a 21 minute walk once I returned home.
  • Friday: A pretty full day of work today, I skipped any chance of a walk for other indoor activities in the evening.

Total: 21 minutes of walking, probably 40 minutes of tennis (totally guessing here), and “running after children,” which, though tiring, I usually don’t count as real exercise. I will count this week as having missed my goals, though I still had a great time. Now that I am home, I will need to get back into my routine.
